Puerta Vieja Hostel is your best choice to experience San Cristobal from the very heart of the city centre. We are only one block away from Main Square, and a five minute walk to the main pedestrian zones where the best bars, restaurants and shops in the city are. There are many things to do in San Cristobal, and we will be happy to provide you with information on what to do during the day or when going out at night.

The fun and friendly ambiance will make you feel comfortable immediately, along with our accommodation options, which are suitable for all - families, individual travelers, couples or groups of different sizes. Our main purpose is for you to have fun and feel cozy enjoying your visit in San Cristobal.

The Hostel has three common areas, for the travelers to meet and share experiences, chat and have a good time. The garden at the back has a deck and hammocks where you can chill out. BBQs take place on a regular basis, so expect a few of these! There is a Temazcal in the garden too, which is the traditional Mayan sauna, experienced through a purifying ritual. The main central patio is the place to have your meals, whether prepared by you in the fully-equipped self-catering kitchen or by our Chef, so you can taste an authentic regional or Mexican meal.

So, YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO PLEASE EVERYBODY. This place is a proof. There was not a single bad thing I could write about it, and I stayed for 10 days or so. Huge lockers, huge personal space, I never even thought I would prefer a single room. This place made my memories from Mexico. Thank you.

Comfortable beds, lots of other people but quiet time after 11pm is good for the nights you want sleep. The chef here is amazing, some of the best meals I have had so far. Sunday night roast was a winner. Good bar, however you can still bring in your own drinks. Breakfast here is awesome too - a cooked savory or sweet option which differs everyday. Booked two nights and ended up staying six.

This hostel is clean, with a very friendy staff, amazing hot showers 24 hours a day, wonderful mattresses, great breakfast, an awesome bar, beautiful garden area to eat breakfast/hang out in the sun/have drinks with friends. There's also a FULLY stocked kitchen and the wi-fi is very good. Almost forgot to mention free drink nights on Tuesdays and Fridays ... all in all a backpacker's dream!! Seriously can't recommend it enough!

this is not just an excellent hostel for all the main reasons: it's beautiful, comfortable, clean, new and good-locationed. when you arrive to Puerta Vieja it quiqlly becomes your home: you start with wonderfull included breakfast following by an amazing dinner from the home-chef. after discovering all the good that San Cristobal have to offer you are allways wellcome to relax at the beautifull garden and later to join all the other guests at the friendly warm and lovely bar with nice coctails! but most of all, what makes Puerta Vieja a home is the loving and carring staff that is allways there for you, with information, advices and alot of love!

would recommend this hostel to anyone. The rooms are fantastic - great comfortable beds and design. Bathrooms are plentiful and clean. There is a great variety of rooms to suit all types of travellers and holiday makers and you can be as involved as you wish with the social aspect of the hostel. The owners are always around and approachable and have great advice and knowledge of the local area. I wish I could have stayed longer.

Shared Dorms for 6 and up to 10 people

All comfort in our Shared Dorms with Big Lockers (Bathroom is outside the room).

Which Amazing Place would you like to experience?

San Juan Chamula & Zinacantan

Runs everyday

Departure: 09:30 hrs - Aprox. Return: 14:00 hrs.

  • Visit the Indigenous Village of San Juan Chamula for 2 hours (take a walk around the Village and visit the Church).
  • Visit the Indigenous Community of Zinacantan for 1 hour and visit a local family.

Includes: ground transportation, entrance fees and english or spanish speaking guide.

Sumidero Canyon, Viewpoints & Chiapa de Corzo

Runs everyday

Departure: 09:00 hrs - Aprox. Return: 18:00 hrs.

  • Journey on the Grijalva River and through the Sumidero Canyon for 2 hours.
  • Visit the Village of Chiapa de Corzo, the most ancient in the state of Chiapas, for 1 hour (possibility of having lunch in Chiapa de Corzo or the Pier).

Includes: ground transportation, entrance fees and boat transportation.

Montebello Lakes & Chiflon Waterfall

Runs everyday

Departure: 08:00 hrs - Aprox. Return: 21:30 hrs.

  • Visit the Lakes of Montebello for 3 hours, with time to walk around the area.
  • Visit the Chiflon Waterfalls for 2 hours (with possibility of swimming and having lunch).

Includes: ground transportation and entrance fees.

Palenque, Agua Azul & Misol-Ha Waterfalls

Runs everyday

Departure: 04:00 hrs - Aprox. Return: 22:30 hrs.

  • Visit the Agua Azul Waterfalls for 1 and a half hours (with possibility of swimming).
  • Visit the Misol-Ha Waterfalls for half an hour (with possibility of swimming).
  • Visit the Archeological site of Palenque for 2 hours.
  • If you want to be dropped off in Palenque please let us know the day before.

Includes: ground transportation and entrance fees.

Palenque, Yaxchilan & Bonampak Ruins

Previous Reservation

Departure: 06:00 hrs

  • We offer different travel packages: from 1 and up to 3 days; departure from San Cristobal and from Palenque; return to Palenque and to San Cristobal; some may include food, accomodation and boat transportation.
  • Please ask us about the different packages once you are in the Hostel to book it (it's needed because of the logistics).

Includes: ground transportation, entrance fees, local transportation and payment to the communities.

Guatemala Transportation

Runs Monday to Friday

Departure: 06:00 hrs

  • Transportation by Shuttle or Bus, depending on the number of people
  • Destinations: Quetzaltenango (Xela) (6 hours), Huehuetenango (6 hours), Chichicastenango (8 hours), Panajachel (Lago Atitlan) (8 hours), Antigua (10 hours), Ciudad de Guatemala (12 hours). Approx times.

Includes: ground transportation.
